3 • Why do my eyes initially sting or burn when I put in my contact lenses?

If your contact lenses burn upon insertion, review your lens-care habits. Have you gotten any chemicals on your hands, such as perfumes, foods, such as onions or peppers, or soaps with lotions? Also consider your lens-care products; you may be reacting to the preservative/ disinfectant in your contact lens solution. If this condition persists, contact your eye-care professional.

4 • Why are my eyes red and irritated at the end of the day?

If your eyes are routinely red and irritated, you should see your eye-care professional. Your care provider will examine your eyes for the presence of infection/inflammation and adequate contact lens fit. The amount of oxygen flow through the lens and the wettability of the contact lens surface are often overlooked as contributors to end-of-day discomfort.

5 • My doctor fit me with silicone hydrogel contact lenses so I could have longer wearing hours, but sometimes my eyes still feel dry. Is there anything I can do?

Silicone hydrogel lenses allows higher oxygen flow to promote better eye health. However, silicone in the lens does not attract moisture to the contact lens surface very well and dry patches on the lens surface are common. A contact lens solution specifically designed with silicone hydrogel contact lenses in mind will provide better comfort and less dryness.
